How to choose your striped desk mat

With stripes the only real decision is colour, so this is sorted by palette rather than theme.

Neutrals: beige, brown, cream

The safest thing in the shop. Warm, quiet, and they disappear into a wooden desk instead of competing with it. If you're buying a mat because the bare desk looks unfinished and not because you want a statement, start here: the beige and brown or the white and beige.

Black and white

High contrast, no warmth, fits a monochrome setup exactly. It's the one that looks deliberate next to black peripherals rather than like an accident. The minimal black and white.

Pastels: pink, lavender, mint

Bold pairs

Why stripes work on a desk

A striped mat gives you a line to align your keyboard and mouse against, which is why a cluttered desk looks tidier the moment one goes down. Horizontal stripes make a narrow desk read wider; vertical ones do the opposite and pull the eye toward the monitor.

Stripes and video calls

One thing worth knowing if your camera points down at the desk: very narrow, high-contrast stripes can shimmer on a webcam. The wider patterns and the neutral palettes don't do it. If you're on calls all day, the beige and cream designs are the safe choice.
